May was a good month for Beaufort SC fishing. The beginning of the month had some really nice weather, while the end of the month brought a lot of wind and rain. Air temperatures ranged from about 60–85 degrees, and water temperatures were generally between 70–80 degrees.
Fish Behavior

Redfish remained a staple, but we also had opportunities at cobia, tarpon, sharks, jacks, and tripletail. This is one of my favorite times of year because there are so many different fish around, and you never know exactly what might show up next.
For fly fishing, not much changed from the previous month. The 3–5 inch flies continued to produce for redfish, and flood tide fishing was much better than it was in April. We saw more fish, caught more fish, and overall had a lot more productive days on the flood tides. There were plenty of opportunities to sight fish to tailing redfish throughout the month.
Spin fishing was productive as well. Topwater lures continued to work well during the early mornings and evenings. On spin trips, we caught bull redfish and cobia, while sharks showed up consistently on both fly and spin trips. Bay boat trips were also producing good numbers of sharks, bull reds, and stingrays.
Memorable Moment
One of the coolest catches of the month came from a 10-year-old client. He made his first sight cast to a fish ever, and that fish happened to be a cobia. Seeing moments like that is one of the best parts about running these trips.
