August was still pretty hot, but it was a little better than July. Air temperatures stayed around 80-90°F, while water temperatures remained around 85-90°F. Afternoon thunderstorms were still common and the rain actually helped the fishing at times. After a good rainstorm, the flood tides were much more productive, while midday flood tides without any rain were not as good. We didn’t really see any signs of the water cooling down yet, so the fishing still had a very summer feel to it.
Fish Behavior
Overall, fishing was good throughout August. Redfish and tarpon were the most consistent species. The best fishing continued to depend a lot on the weather, especially with how hot it was during the middle of the day.
Memorable Moment
The biggest fish of August was a tarpon around 70 pounds. A 9 year old was able to reel it in after his dad hooked the fish on a fly rod. Getting a fish that size on a fly is already a pretty cool experience, but seeing a 9 year-old reel in a 70 pound tarpon made it even better!!
