April has always been one of my favorite months of the year here in the Lowcountry of Beaufort, SC. As the air temperature starts to warm up amazing things start happening to the fishery! The bait starts moving back in along with Cobia, Triple Tail, Blue Fish, Jacks, and an assortment of other seasonal species. The Redfish, Sea Trout, and Flounder also kick back in feeding mode which makes for some great days on the water fly fishing or light tackle fishing.
Cobia are one of my favorite fish to target here in Beaufort, SC because of how special it is that we have the opportunity to target them inshore while they are spawning. It is an absolute blast sight fishing a 40lb Cobia just a few hundred yards from where we catch Redfish. I started targeting Cobia last week and went 2 for 4 with some return anglers from the upstate landing a 22lb cobra and an 18lb cobia sight fishing!
Light tackle fishing has been awesome and will only get better as the warmer months pass by. Fishing up to 4 anglers on my 22ft pathfinder is always a good time with families on vacation or spring break this time of year. Mostly using live mud minnows or artificial during a rising or falling tide has been the ticket for great bites.
I started targeting Tailing Redfish during the flood tides over the past few weeks and have had some really great days in the grass. There is nothing better than watching a tailing redfish eat your fly or artificial. Low tide fishing has also been great on the fly with schools of redfish still roaming around the shallow water flats. Have started to see signs of the fish getting in their summer patterns chasing bait, causing around with their backs out, and lots of flashing.
